Vienna, Austria

We will arrive in Vienna around 8am.  We will spend the entire day here.  We are scheduled for a walking tour of the city.

We are up early.  Bob went to the lounge and was the only one there.  Then he went up on the sun deck and only the Captain was there.  I guess everyone is sleeping in after so much fun last night.

Breakfast we sat with Bud and Carolyn from Jacksonville.  Carolyn is feeling better but not 100%.  We got ready for our tour.  Here in Vienna you dock out of the city so we had to take a bus into the city to begin our tour.

Vienna is a modern city.  After all of the medieval cities on this tour, it is refreshing to see a modern city.  The following are some of the large modern building here at the port.  I do not know what they are but the one with the crane will be the tallest building in the city when it is complete.

Another modern building at the port area.

Also at the port area is the beautiful church.  We did not have the time to enter the church so maybe next visit.

Our bus left us off near St. Stephen's Church and the walking tour began.  We went into the church but it was dark inside.  And you had to pay extra to get up close to the altar.  So we wandered around the church and took lots of pictures.

The bus left us off at St. Stephen's Church.  Another beautiful exterior.  But a strange interior.  We were not able to go close to the altar unless we paid extra and with so little time allowed for the visit, we elected to just visit for afar.

Lot of visitors to the church.  Vienna is really a tourist city.

The interior is a surprise.

The people did not like the white windows so they have colored them.  So now they are stuck with the colors.

This piece is beautiful.

After our visit to St. Stephen's we walked over to the Spanish Horse Barn.  Got to see one horse.  I do not know a lot about the Spanish Horses.

Looks a little like Mr. Ed.  Like he is talking to you Aiden.  "Study hard in school".

St. Stephen's Church from another side.

Downtown Vienna.  It was a beautiful sunny day.

This square takes its name from the Roman trench that was filled in  about 1200 and which protected the legionnaires' camp.  The Holy Trinity Column, the sumptuous centre of the Graben, is a reminder of the great plague of 1679.

Everywhere you look there is something wonderful to see.  Above is St. Peter's Church.  Emperor Charles the Great is said to have erected a church here on the foundations of a Roman church of the 4th century.  The best artists of the Austrian Baroque gave the church its form today.

Horse and carriage is still a wonderful way to get around the city.

These ladies are all made out of sugar.  Cakes and tortes are popular here.

Next we walked by the Opera House.  We were then on our own.  We walked over to the Sacher Hotel. Bob stayed here in 1964.  So we had tea, coffee and a Sacher Torte.  Then the bus back to the boat.

This sculptor is in honor of the invasion of Austria and its freedom.

Lunch with Dale, Chris, Joe and Emily.  After lunch we took our nap.  Instead of going back into the city, we decided to exercise.  Bob walked on the deck and I did 35 minutes in the pool.  The pool is not deep but I was able to get in a good work out.  Not 5 minutes after I got out of the pool, two of the wind barriers fell into the pool.  I could have been really hurt or killed.  Boy was I lucky.

We sat on the balcony and enjoyed our tea and coffee when three people stopped to talk with us.   They are on the Viking Vienna.  Their trip ends tomorrow in Budapest.

Dinner was with Stephen and Nancy.  Half of the passengers were off for a concert so dinner was quiet and quite enjoyable.  We closed the dining room.  Now catching up on the blog and then bed.
