Cruising the Main and then Bamberg

This morning we were just resting in bed when we passed a small village named Mainberg.  What got us up was the ringing of the church bells.  No sleeping in in this village.  But it was nice to hear the bells.  Seven AM.

Dressed and to breakfast.  We sat at a round table for six.  Tony and Sandy from Hawaii joined us and later, Dale and Chris from Memphis joined the table.  We had great conversation.  Back to the cabin to work on my cross stitch as Bob was getting the pictures from yesterday edited for me.

We listened to the lecture on the TV.  It was given by Daniel Guertel on the European Union now and in the future.  Quite interesting.

Then there was a Fruhschoppen party in the lounge.  German sausages (three different kinds) and beer. We sat with Bob and Karen from Sarasota, Florida.  It was fun but with all the sausages and beer, no additional lunch was needed so we took an early nap.

The last lock we are going through before we arrive in Bamberg is going to raise the ship 6.3 feet.  So when we are in the lock, it gets pretty dark in the cabin until we get raised up.

Our excursion was a walking tour of Bamberg.  We had to take a bus into the city as we were docked out on a canal.  This was Sunday and most everything was closed.  But they were running a marathon in the city so it was crowded.

Typical buildings you see in Bamberg.

Some of the buildings still have the wood design.  Bamberg was not bombed during the war but all the bridges were.  This was done by the German's so the Allies could not cross the river.

After much discussion, the town hall was built on the water.  Neither side wanted it so they decided to build it in the center.  This is one of the bridges that will take you to the town hall.

This is the town hall.  It has been painted to make it look like there are statues and columns on the building.  It is not used today as the town hall.

Some of the crowds gathering for the marathon.  Actually, it was a half marathon.  But they did not start it until 3:30pm.

Some of the runners.

Like most marathons, there was music to cheer the runners onward.

The water rushes through the city so they have made a kayak course.

And someone thought this statue needed a jacket.

Does anyone think this guy is lost?

We stopped at a cafe for a free smoked beer.  I brought mine back with me but Bob and I did share one.

We rode back to the ship and dressed for dinner.  We sat with Rita and Ahmen again.  Had nice conversation.

Back to the cabin to read and lights out.
