Shanghai - Day Two

We stayed overnight docked in Shanghai.  On Wednesday the weather was rainy and foggy.  Our tour today was "Water Town of Zhujiajao".  This town is often compared to Venice due to all the canals.  The drive from Shanghai to Zhujiajao took about one hour.  Once we arrived the tour was mostly on foot.

We were to take one of these boats down the canal but when we arrived at the dock, no boats were there.  So we took the walk first.

Many bridges go over the canals.   And motorcycles are the only means of transportation in the town.

Another of the bridges.

This is an old pagoda in the center of the town.

We did not visit the pagoda but just saw from the outside.

Once we arrived at our boat dock, we walked down the steps and entered the boat.  Only six at a time can ride.

This is inside the post office.  In olden times most of the older adults could not write so they would sit at this desk and have someone write the messages for them.

Bob took this picture from our boat ride.  The pictures are some what out of order but I did not want to chance losing them if I tried to move them around.  Just go with it.

During our walk we passed many street food vendors.  I think these are wings.

Another from our ride.

And again, street food.

The sign outside the Pharmacy.  As in the present time, much of the Chinese medicine is herbal.

And much of the herbs are stored in the jars and in the drawers.

Most of the street food.  I think these are pig knuckles.

And this is the boat we took.  Just like in Venice, no motor just an oar in the back.  But no singing.

I think it is hard work but men and women do the steering.

Then back to Shanghai.  We were scheduled to leave at 1pm but due to the fog, the Harbor Master closed the river to ships of our size.  So we had to wait until we were allowed to leave.

As it turned out, the river stayed closed all night and we could not leave so the Captain and the home office decided we would stay another day in Shanghai and skip the port of Kobe, Japan.  Which is what we did.

We went to the show as it was before dinner and sat with Alden and Doll and Betty and Al.  These are our neighbors here on the ship.  And then we all had dinner together.  We had a nice table for 6 and a great time at dinner.  Doll and Alden live in NJ and Naples, FL.  Betty and Al live in AZ.  Nice people.

Back to the suite to read and lights out.
