Panama Canal Transit

Friday we spent the entire day doing a transit of the Panama Canal.  This is our 5th time through the Canal and it never ceases to amaze me that this was built in 1914.  And still going strong.  They are building a new canal north of the present one so that the larger ships can transit the canal.  It should be complete by 2014.  The cost to transit the Canal is based on the size of the vessel.  Our ship paid about $100,000.00 to transit and it is paid before you can enter the Canal and they do not take credit cards.  Smart.

We entered the first set of locks at about 7:30am and we exited the last set of locks at about 5pm.  It is interesting to watch the ships being raised or lowered.  We had breakfast in the Compass Rose and when we sat down, all we could see out of the window was a cement wall.  By the time we finished breakfast, we were above the wall so you really got to see us being raised.

Taking a little snooze

While Bob took pictures, I took a little nap.  We got up early and did our water exercises for 45 minutes.  Early the pool is not so crowded but latter it gets crowded so we like to go early.

I did not go to needlepoint today as we decided to swim again.  This time with only our hand gloves.  Dinner was in Compass Rose and good.  They have plenty of tables for two so it has not been hard at all.  After dinner we returned to the cabin and watched a show on MSNBC.  They have interesting shows at night that we have never seen.
