Komodo, Indonesia

Today we anchor off the island of Komodo, Indonesia.  The island is one of 17,508 islands that make up the "Republic of Indonesia".  The Komodo Dragon is the largest species of lizard on earth and live alongside a population of about 200 people who are descendants of former convicts who were excited
to the island.  They say it is quite safe as long as you stay with a park guide.

Since we went to bed early last night, we are up early this morning.  We do not arrive at Komodo Island until around noon.  We had breakfast in La Veranda.  After breakfast I went up to Observation Lounge for an early morning needlepoint.  Then back to the suite to ready for our tour.

The sail in is beautiful.  The islands are green and peaceful.

We had to anchor here as the ship is too large to dock.

We were greeted by young lads in their canoes begging for money.

We were in the early group and were lucky.  It only got hotter later in the day.  On our walk about the island, out guide caught a flying lizard.  They can fly up to three feet from tree to tree.

And then the reason for our being here.  The komodo dragon.  They are really big.  The guide has two helpers who carry sticks to poke the eyes of the dragons if they come too close.  They only eat meat so I guess a tourist or two would do.

They have forked tongues and we are told that the saliva is poison to humans.

Now this male tried to get cozy with the female but she would have non of it.

Only another dragon would find her attractive.

And the deer on the island really only serve as food for the dragons.

These are the fishing boats the locals use.

We were so hot that we only wanted to get back to the ship.  One man in the group behind us had an incident and had to be carried by stretcher to the tender.  It really was hot and humid.

Back on the ship we had a hot dog at the grill and then back to the suite to nap.  I could not sleep so I worked on my needlepoint and then we dressed for dinner.

Wanted to make it to the show but I did not feel so well, so we came back to the suite where I worked on the blog and then bed.
